Why am I getting only cold water from my gas storage hot water heater?
Has the pilot light gone out? Follow the instructions, (usually found on the inside of the burner cover), to relight the pilot light. If the pilot light will not stay lit, you may have a faulty flame failure device or thermostat control valve. Depending on the age of the heater, you have the option of repairing or replacing the water heater.

Why am I getting only cold water from my electric storage hot water heater?
Have you checked the fuse or circuit breaker for your hot water heater? If the fuse is unbroken, you may have a dead element or thermostat. If the fuse has blown, you may reset it, but it is more than likely that an electical fault, such as a faulty element and/or thermostat, has caused the tripped fuse and the problem will reoccur. Depending on the age of the heater, you have the option of repairing or replacing the water heater.

Why am I getting less hot water from my gas or electric storage hot water heater?
Your thermostat, (gas or electric), or your element (electric), is faulty and needs attention. Another possibility is that the relief valve on the tank is releasing a lot of water or you have a burst hot water pipe. In these cases, hot water is escaping and the heater cannot keep up with the loss. Depending on the fault and the age of the heater, you have the option of making repairs or replacing the water heater.

Why am I getting only cold water from my continuous flow hot water heater, (Infinity, Integrity, etc.)?
Check that the heater is plugged into the outdoor powerpoint and that the powerpoint is working. If you have a temperature controller inside the house, check that it is switched on. Normally after a blackout or after power has been shut off, you will need to swich the unit on via the controller. This is not necessary if a controller was not included in your installation. If everything seems fine, check that you have gas to the rest of the house and, if you still can find nothing wrong, please call
Able Hot Water.

Why is there water dripping or running from the relief valve?
It is normal for water to drip from the temperature and pressure relief valve when the system is heating because water expands as it is heated. If the valve drips or runs continuously, the hot water temperature and cold water inlet pressure needs to be checked. If the water is too hot, the thermostat needs to be adjusted or replaced. If the inlet pressure is too high, the pressure limiting valve should be checked or replaced. If both values are fine, then the temperature and pressure relief valve is at fault. In any case, please call
Able Hot Water.

Why is there no water at all running from my hot water taps?
If it is just the one tap, make sure that it is not a jammed tap washer in the tap itself or a blocked aerator in the spout. If you have no water at any hot taps, it could be that the dual control/check valve on the inlet to the tank is faulty and needs replacing. If you have a gravity-feed tank in the roof, the tank could be empty due to a stuck or faulty inlet valve, (not filling the tank correctly), or faulty solenoid valve. In any of these situations, please call
Able Hot Water.

Why is there brown dirty water running from my hot water taps?
This is normally an early sign that the inner lining of the steel hot water cylinder has eroded and that failure of the integrity of the cylinder is imminent. Please call
Able Hot Water and if the water heater is located inside the house, do not wait too long before taking action, due to a higher risk of water damage.

There is water leaking from my hot water heater. What should I do?
If your hot water heater has "burst" or is leaking from the top or any other part of the casing, turn the cold water inlet control tap off. This is sometimes a t-headed tap near the bottom of the heater but more commonly now will have a round, black plastic handle. In either case, turn the handle clockwise until tap is off. If you cannot get close enough to the tap without getting wet or scalded, turn the water off at your water meter first. Then turn off the gas supply to the water heater, or power, whichever the case may be. Finally, please call
Able Hot Water to have the water heater replaced.

Why is there water leaking from a pipe through my eaves?
This is usually due to water draining from the safe-tray under a gravity-feed hot water heater in the roof. The water is usually the result of the cold water inlet valve not shutting off and the feed tank overflowing into the safe-tray. It could also mean that the tank itself is leaking into the tray and needs replacing. In either instance, please call
Able Hot Water.
